You could code your own to the spec if you really wanted, but it's a hell of a lot of work - most people buy the APIs and documentation from one of two providers.
The stack provides the raw components to support the various Bluetooth profiles.
Mario Party 8's a bad example anyway - the game's pretty average all around.
Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 are better examples of what 1st generation Wii games could look like.
Someone can write an application to run apps like Xbox media center with it all streaming from your PC.
People can make their own wii games, emulators, maybe some DS connectivity to the wii? Some are also talking about the fact that you might be able to run an exploit from a memory card on bootup....i.e. Whatever happens, it won't be for a while - these things take time.
Right now the wii with a modchip can run gamecube homebrew....which is limited to gamecube hardware. you can't use the wii remote, SD card post, USB port, wifi etc.
Wii Homebrew means you can hack the crap out of the console and make it do anything.
Some games *cough* Mario Party 8 *cough* don't even support 16:9 in-game. For what it is, I don't know if it's exactly shocking.
While the APIs are there, you need to attach them to the hardware via code.
And, the commerical stacks suck - they're a pain in the ass to develop for, given most implementation don't entirely stick to the standard.
On the other hand, I played Guitar Hero III for the first time at a mate's place the other night, and it was just too good...
I'll probably just cave and get one when stock becomes available.
